What is waste water?

If you are curious about how the waste water is treated, before that, you might actually need to know what this waste water is really. Waste water is the water that drains from the kitchen sinks, baths, showers, toilet and industrial waste. This waste water is collected in big tanks for the process of segregating waste materials. Once the water is collected in huge tanks, the solids and waste substances settle down in the bottom, while the oil and fat substances float on top of the water.

Waste Water Treatment

The waste water goes through a series of steps before the harmful substances are completely removed from them. Sludge is formed after the waste water is left to remain in huge tanks. This sludge is removed for further treatment to make it harmless to the environment. The water is moved to secondary waste water treatment process for further processes.

During the next process, micro organisms are introduced into the tanks to decompose small elements that remain in the base of the waste water. It is also aerated with oxygen for cleansing process. The sludge that remains in the bottom is scraped and removed while the left over waste water is moved to tertiary treatment.

During the last level of waste water treatment harmful chemical substance like nitrogen and other are removed from the waste water. Once the waste water is designated to be environmentally safe it is then drained into rivers, water irrigation and agricultural lands.

Environmental Hazards

Talking about the environmental hazards, if the waste water is not treated properly it can lead to dissolved oxygen levels that affect the habitat of fishes and other aquatic life.

• Excessive levels of chemical substances like nitrogen or phosphorus can be poisonous, deplete oxygen level and affect marine life.
•  Further, chemicals like chlorine can be harmful to invertebrates like algae and fish.
